The truth hurts...and now, so does the tooth.

So today was my dreaded appointment with the oral surgeon. This did not go well. I felt like he was irritated with me for even being there, and how dare I need my wisdom teeth removed. He told me that I need all 4 of them gone, and that the two bottom ones have messed up the ones next to it, so I should get those removed as well. Ugh. He also told me that since my wisdom teeth are so close to a nerve, theres a high chance that he could hit it and leave me with a permanently numb lip.

What.the.eff.

So now Im getting stressed out, and I know it was showing all over my face.(Ask anyone I know and they will tell you my face speaks more than my mouth does!) He tells me he can take only one out if I cant afford the 1,090 dollars + anesthia or whatever. Really? How kind of you. Probably the part I liked the least is when he shamed me for not having this all taken care of when I was 18. He says thats usually when they are removed. At 18...I was having many a problem in life, moving out, moving awaaaay, moving back, finding a job...stuff like that. I dont think I had any problems with my wisdom teeth back then and I told him that to which he responded that it doesnt matter, they could have taken them out anyways. Ugh. So I go to the front counter to pay and they charged me $170!! I almost peed my pants. When I called around for quotes, they quoted me between 90-100. I told the girl that and she said it was because they had to do xrays. !!!!!!!!!!! So now I wrote a check for that amount and to be honest, I dont even have that, which means, I have to go begging to my mom and dad. UGH! Im so pissed right now.

Im going to try my hardest to hold off on getting them pulled until January. Im going to pray and pray and hope and hope that I can do this. I cannot go to my boyfriend and ask him to pay for anything else, my heart is already heavy on stuff he IS doing for me.

My dad called me to tell me the movie 'Annie' was on. How cute is that? That he still remembers how much I love that movie? I get so emotional every time I even bring this story up lol, the fact that my dad called me to tell me this movie was on. I hate being 3000 miles away from so much, especially when I have so little here. Anyways, Im depressed nearly every single day but I know every single day Im going to get a small blessing and I do! So that was todays, and I loved it!

Hows it going with you? And how funny is 'That 70s Show"?! Hanging outttttttt...down the streeet....the same ol thingggg...we did last week...

Oh my god, girl, get a second opinion. That dentist sounds like a terrible person, and I would not let him anywhere near me, much less my teeth.

I never even knew I had wisdom teeth until they started coming in at 23... and hardly any of my friends had them taken out when they were 18.

Seriously, this guy sounds awful. Did you try looking up the dentistry schools? You could at least get another opinion from them, if nothing else.

Blah. I understand feeling depressed and having no money. I mean, I have a job right now but I make enough to pay the bills and that's about it. You are smart, and you will succeed. You are in my thoughts. =)

Oh noes!!! I am so very sorry! Dude that dentist was an ass. Do you know anyone in the dental field in your area you can ask for suggestions for another oral surgeon. Or can you call your original dentist and ask if there is anyone else they recommend. My son has major dental problems that we didn't realize till to late. We took him to pediatric dentist (4 yr old) and they made us feel like total CRAP! I was already guilting myself enough without their help. They wanted close to 3k for his teeth and anest. this is after insurance which is a decent plan. We declined because we don't have that laying around. They told us not to be surprised if he starts screaming in the middle of the night and when we call all they can do is prescribe antib. @@ Well of course it did happen
:( on a Thursday night and it seems pediatric dentist are closed on Fridays. I found a family dentist 35 miles away open on Sat. He couldn't do anything because all they used was novocaine and you can imagine that only on a 4 yr old. BUT they did give us the number to a dentist that was willing to work with you. This place is sooo much nicer and no guilt which I appreciate. We are doing his mouth in like 4 trips area by area. It will cost more in the long run but easier to come up with $500 than 3 thousand.

So long sorry to say that it may take many calls to find a place willing to help. Can wisdom be done with gas or consious sedation? 4yr old is consious sedation ($271 a pop) vs the anesti. My husband is 30 and he still has his. It all just depends on your mouth. :/ Sorry!

If you post a city near you maybe someone will have an idea?

what.A.Prick.
I would have told him if I wanted a commentary on my life I would have called my mother.
oy.
I would tell them that I want my x rays and a second opinion. IF they give you any guff tell them you PAID for the xrays. And they are yours.
honestlly.
And how sweet your dad called and told you about your favorite movie. Your parents will probably be glad to help you.
I hope you feel better.

If you have to get all four removed, I would seriously consider going to a university to get it done. They will do it for about a quarter of the cost, and if it is an 'emergency' (aka yours is), they will bump you to within a month. While it is a student working on your teeth, their teacher is in the room with them ensuring they don't make any mistakes, and the younger dentists are also trained to be much more gentle than the older dentists were. I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed surgically, the bottom two both in the same situation as yours and I dont' regret it - and I got it done at the local university.

Comment on SlenderSwan2B's comment:

Wisdom teeth can be done with either gas or cx sedation, OR they can do it by just freezing the gums (like they would to pull any other tooth or to fill a cavity), which only costs about $30.

I agree with the other commentors, definitely get a second opinion and look into other options. Sound to me like they're just trying to gouge you financially - and make you feel bad at the same time! I still have all my wisdom teeth at 38 btw, and no way would I have an operation, however common, for NO reason (as they weren't bothering you at 18). He sounds like an ass.
its a shame you are so far from your family, but still, they're thinking of you and letting you know it, and your boyfriend sounds like a sweetheart. I know its hard when you're depressed, but there are a couple of bright sides! I loved that 70s show too btw - it was hilarious!

That is a huge problem. A university dental school is the best way out.

Do it soon! The best of luck!

Girl, you need a new dentist, NOW! No doctor should make you feel like crap when you go to them to ask for a pb to get solved!
He's a jerk!

Melissa said...

That is a major bummer!

I get where the doctor was going; however, the way he said things and his attitude sounds ridiculously rude!

I agree: try and find another doctor or source to get the work done.

Good luck!

And I am sure it is very hard ot stay positive when you are in pain and you have this huge medical bill looming... but try. Easier said than done... but you seem strong. You can do it.

All I have to say is, FIND A DIFFERENT DOCTOR! I wouldn't want someone so insensitive working in my mouth! What a jerk!

Um, that surgeon sounds like an ass. I hope you'll find another one. Because now I am stressed.

You're so on my mind right now. I'll be praying, too.

When I needed to have my wisdoms done this summer (at 29) I asked everyone I knew, posted on Facebook and Craigs, asking if anyone had any names or suggestions. The guy I went with was amazing! Just put it out there and someone in a situation like your may have a name for you. Best of luck :-(

At 18? I don't even think I had wisdom teeth at that age LOL Sorry the surgeon is an idiot! Any chance you could get a second opinion?

This is the time to ask your parents for help. I have told my son many times (he's 24 and in graduate school) that if he ever really NEEDS something (there is nothing frivolous about dental work) he can always come to us. I'm sure your folks feel the same. Be it a loan or a gift, doesn't matter. I know they wouldn't sleep at night knowing you were in pain.

Another comment, RE: bangs. If you straighten your hair most days, they should have no problem giving you bangs. Even if you wear your hair curly, just straighten the bangs and it's fine. Mine is naturally wavy, so at the place today they just straightened the bangs and then left the rest of it curly. It's worth a shot - I think you would look great with bangs! Plus, if you get long ones, it doesn't take much to grow them out if you end up not liking them. (At least that is what they told me today...

Ag, that sucks. Going to the dentist is already so not fun; they charge too much and they know they can because usually you are desperate when you come to them! I agree, see if you can see someone else. I only thought they took them out if you had a problem anyways.
